Today I am going to share with you the 4 ways that I make sure to get something productive done every day while working & moming from home.
The number one thing that I hear most from Work-From-Home-Moms is that they have no idea where their day went. They turn around and it’s 5pm. Have you ever experienced this? I know I sure have. I remember when Baby H was first born, my days seemed to just fly by. Somewhere around him turning 7 weeks old is when it really started to bug me that I couldn’t seem to put my finger on exactly how I spent my day. Everyone gets the same amount of hours in the day, and yet I couldn’t seem to do anything productive during the day.
Yes, I had a newborn, but did that mean that I was supposed to simply do nothing but “mom” with my days?
I even considered stopping Hart Of Blogging at one point.
I just didn’t have the time to type posts, read other blogs, comment on other blogs, keep up with Twitter, and create media/images for the Blog/Twitter/Instagram. This stuff takes time like any blogger out there knows. Well, being a mom to a newborn takes way more time and honestly is my #1 priority. So, yeah. It came to the point where I honestly didn’t think I was going to be able to do it all.
Well, let me tell you. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!
For about 7 of the last 11 days I have woken up at 5:30am and stayed up. (Yes, I started a few days before the New Year) I use to get up at 5:30am, feed Baby H, and head back to bed until Baby, Hubby and I all woke up again at 8/8:30am. Seriously, from 5:30-8:30am, it’s like a whole different world compared to our 8:30am-9:30pm world.
I have a minute to minute daytime routine that will be posted as a guest post coming shortly so be on the lookout for that.
But let’s just say I get reading done, a small 1st breakfast eaten, blog posts get written, and most mornings I get a little yoga in. Plus a few other things on good days.
Waking up early is definitely my #1 way to make sure I know I get some things done each day. But let’s jump into my
4 Ways To Stay Productive
My #1 way to stay productive on those busy days is to simply wake up early.
For me, this looks like 5:30am. For you, it may simply be getting out of bed at 7:30 instead of 8:30. Whatever time it is, get up at least 1 hour earlier than you actually need to be up. You’d be surprised how much you can get done in an hour with a little bit of determination and COFFEE!
The second thing that I recommend doing to stay productive is to keep a bullet list or bullet journal.
Now, most people may tell you to write out a time schedule for what you want to do that day. Example, at 6am list out what you want to do at 6:15, 6:30, 7am etc. I personally can not stick to anything like that. Things come up, the schedule doesn’t go the way I had laid out and then I end up feeling like I’ve failed. What I like to do instead is list things as I go. I use an app on my phone and I keep track of what I was doing at 7am, 2:10pm, 5:35pm and so on. Every 10-15 minutes I log something even if it’s just that I spent 10 minutes making coffee and putting away dishes. That way I can look back and see exactly where my day was spent and on what. It also helps, for example, if it gets to 3pm and I have a little time to kill. I can see what I’ve done that day and then focus on anything I specifically wanted to get done before the day ends.
The next tip I have for staying productive is to have your WHY in mind.
If you have no real reason for waking up 1-2 hours before you need to, then chances are you will not stick to waking up early. However, if you set the alarm on your phone for your WHY, then you are more likely to get up and continue getting up to get things done.
My fourth and final tip would be to set #GOALS for yourself.
I am a firm believer in setting goals. Whether they be short term, long term, weekly, monthly or yearly. Heck, even daily goals can be good. Just sit down and intentionally write down the top 3 things you want to achieve each day (or week, month, etc). Now, put this list everywhere! Put a copy at your desk, tape a copy to your bathroom mirror, even stick a copy on the sun visor in your car. Wherever you can think of. This way, you will be reminded of your goals every time you see one of these lists. Maybe even add your WHY to the top of each list. This will help you keep your goals in mind and why you want to work towards those goals. Which in turn, will help you be more productive throughout your day/week/etc.
So, let’s recap.
#1. Wake up early!
#2. Write everything down(bullet journal/list)
#3. Know your WHY.
#4. Set #GOALS for yourself.
These 4 things have seriously changed my days, my productivity, and essentially, my life. These 4 tips have given me time to myself in the mornings, time to work on my business, time to focus on my Little Man during the day with no “Boss Mom” guilt, and time to just get organized before anyone else is awake.
I hope you have found these tips helpful. Let me know in the comments – What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a bit more productive during their day.
