Early mornings and I have never been very good friends. As I get older, part of me feels super guilty on days when I sleep till 10! I can hear my grandmother’s words ringing in my ear from when I was younger, asking if I was going to sleep half the day away! LOL. Thank the Lord, I have gotten much better at waking up at a decent time, some days I even wake up before my alarm! Coffee definitely helps on those slow moving mornings. I know as well as anyone that each morning can present its own set of challenges. I have come up with SIX tips that I hope will help you get a smoother start to each day. These are some things that I try to always include in my morning routine and when I do, I am always glad I did!
Here we go ~
Set your alarm for about 10 minutes before you think you should wake up. Then sit your phone, or alarm clock ( anyone still use these?? ), on the other side of the room, or even in a different room on super loud! This will force you to get out of the bed to turn it off.
( If you’re sitting it in a different room, I recommend doing a “test night” on a weekend or something to make sure you hear it the next morning.)
Take a few minutes the night before and have your outfit planned. Make sure your purse is packed and your shoes match each other! Doing this will take the guess work out of what to wear before heading out the door! This will also ensure that you won’t walk out the door, look down and realize you’re still in bedroom slippers! (Yes, I speak from experience!)
Go ahead and prepare your breakfast or lunch the night before. Have it ready to go in a container in the fridge.
A few great “ready-to-go” breakfast options could be healthy muffins, fruit bowls, overnight oats, or chia pudding. All of these are best made the night before. I have a few favorite recipes. Let me know if you’d like me to share them!
P.S. – One batch of muffins could cover your breakfast for a few days!
Social Media is great, but first COFFEE!
Just saying, skip the screen first thing in the morning.
Now, this is a toughy for me. I am so accustomed to rolling over and immediately checking Instagram or Facebook, but I’m telling you, skipping this and waiting till a little later in the morning has been a great “new” habit!
The reason I recommend this step is because you are likely to see something that will put you in a bad mood and set your day off on the wrong foot. Have some coffee (or tea), grab a muffin or some sort of food, then sit down and do what you have to do. Allow your body (and brain) to wake up fully, then dive into the internet world.
Make your bed! Not to sound like your mother, but seriously the simple act of throwing the covers over your bed in a orderly fashion can give you a sense of accomplishment and will make you want to go out and accomplish other things throughout your day.
Brush your teeth and THEN have your morning water or coffee. If you wake up and immediately go to have something to drink, you are swallowing all the bacteria and “gunk” that accumulated in your mouth overnight. ICK!
Okay, so there you have it. Six simple tips that I try to apply to my life each day. I hope these tips bring some ease to your morning routine.
